Defiant Requiem

Created in response to the story of Rafael Schächter and the thousands imprisoned in Terezín, this series reflects on the power of music, color, and collective creativity to sustain life in moments of profound darkness. Inspired by the belief that prisoners experienced a form of synesthesia—feeling warmth and color where none existed—I explore how the human spirit transforms deprivation into defiance. These works honor the voices lifted in Verdi’s Requiem inside a camp built to break them, revealing how artistic expression can illuminate hope and restore dignity even under unimaginable circumstances.
