Artist Statement
My artwork is deeply rooted in the natural world, drawing inspiration from my love of being outdoors and my affinity for water and forests. These elements serve as a canvas for exploring memory, place, and cultural narratives. Through my work, I aim to evoke the serenity of nature and the layered histories embedded in our surroundings, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences and connections.
In addition to nature, my art often incorporates themes from Jewish culture, reflecting my heritage and identity. This cultural layer adds depth to my work, exploring how Judaism has adapted and survived through history. My series "Diaspora" investigates the notion of a "portable" religion and the resilience of Jewish communities through periods of exile and displacement. Pieces like "Wisdom's Wandering" delve into mystical Jewish texts, using abstract forms to represent spiritual narratives and the concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world).
Other works, such as "Defiant Requiem," respond to historical events, capturing the resilience and creativity of Jews during the Holocaust. This series highlights the transformative power of music and the human spirit under extraordinary circumstances. Similarly, "Traces" examines the remnants of Jewish presence in Europe, focusing on the mezuzot that mark doorposts as silent witnesses to history.
"Begin Again" reflects on the Jewish concept of renewal and the Shmita year, a time of ecological and social reset. This triptych weaves together themes of expulsion, environmental stewardship, and the cyclical nature of renewal.
