Traces
On my visits to Europe, I was always excited to discover mezuzot hanging on doorposts at home as in shops, and sometimes I discover a fossil tracing where a mezuzah used to hang.
When people are forced to leave their homes and communities, what traces do they leave behind? This series is about the fossils of memory on the doorposts of the homes. What stories are hidden behind those doors? In each, there is a layered history which we cannot know. What did we leave behind, and what did we carry with us? Judaism is a portable religion. We took with us our mezuzot and our optimism and will to survive.
